Sustainability may seem like a new buzzword, but it's been CAESER’s focus for more than 25 years. We understand the challenges water managers face in meeting the demands of their diverse customer base (municipalities, industry, agriculture) without damaging the natural water system or the ecological dependencies of that system. Our water research encompasses groundwater, surface water and atmospheric contributions to surface processes:

  • Water mass balance (atmospheric, surface and subsurface)
  • Environmental assessments
    • Conduct stream condition surveys to identify impacts to the river and riparian ecosystem
    • Map illegal dumping/discharges, identify destructive farming practices, and propose remediation recommendations
    • Identify potential contamination sources to drinking water supplies
    • Test soils for contamination such as from mining
  • Groundwater assessment and modeling
    • Conduct water level surveys to map gradients
    • Collect water samples for geochemical analysis and age-dating
    • Perform aquifer characterization
    • Conduct numerical modeling to simulate complex flow conditions and predict long-term stressor impacts
  • Contaminant fate and transport
    • Identify contamination sources and concentrations
    • Perform numerical modeling to delineate contaminant plumes and their migration
  • Groundwater/surface water interaction
    • Study hyporheic exchange flows in stream channels and riparian areas
    • Determine mixing regime from geochemical signatures
    • Perform physical measurements on exchange rates
  • Subsurface mapping of geologic features and strata
    • Use geophysical techniques (P-wave, S-wave, electric resistivity, GPR) to map substrata
    • Characterize geologic properties from downhole logging and analysis of drill cuttings/cores
  • Hydrological Studies
    • Perform flood routing and analysis of inundation extents
    • Measure stream discharge
    • Install stream gaging and weather stations
    • Conduct rainfall analyses (climatic and extreme events)
    • Assess washload as well as suspended and bed sediment loads
    • Ascertain surface water availability
  • Sustainable river engineering and restoration
    • Develop sustainable solutions for flood control
    • Assess environmental impacts of hydropower and water resources projects
    • Design ecogeomorphologically sound stream restoration projects*
  • Public awareness
    • Inform the public about the importance of water conservation and the origin of their water
    • Teach what ecological services are provided by aquatic ecosystems
